How to Volunteer

The minimum commitment is half a day, once every two weeks - though VRP provides replacements to cover holidays and backups for last minute cancellations.

With the exception of personal holidays, volunteers must be available from early October until late May.

Requirements / Training

  • Value literacy and love to read
  • Are 20 years or older and fluent in English
  • Enjoy working with young children
  • Can volunteer during school hours from October to May
  • Will attend a two-hour online training workshop each September
  • Will secure a Vulnerable Sector Screen Police Record Check

Vulnerable Sector Screen - Police Record Check

Toronto Police Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS)

Volunteers who reside in Toronto can complete the Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS) online. We strongly encourage all volunteers to complete the VSS online.

NB: this information is for residents of Toronto (postal code starting with M only.) For residents outside of Toronto, please obtain their VSS at the Police Service in the jurisdiction where you permanently reside.  More information can be found for Durham, Peel and York using the links at the bottom.

Please let Kristina know as soon as you submit your VSS application to your Police Service.  Please note you can check back on the VSS page on the Toronto Police Service website to get an idea of when your VSS will be processed.

Toronto Police Annual Offence Declaration (AOD)

Every year volunteers who have had a recent VSS must submit an Annual Offence Declaration. This declaration is a PDF that you fill in and email to the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Details are in the AOD Form

Offline Process

There is a manual process which you can use if you are unable to use the online process.

When the form is complete you can submit it in person or by mail:

  • In person
    • Visit our Information Access counter at our Headquarters, located at 40 College Street. We are open Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays, from 7 am to 4:30 pm
    • Your agency (Toronto District School Board) will need to provide you with their agency code in order for you to submit your application  (this code is already included in the VSC Application form linked above)
    • Administrative fee, if applicable, can be paid with debit or credit at our Information Access counter
  • By mail
    • Your agency (TDSB) will need to provide you with our application form, which must have their agency code on it  (this code is already included in the VSC Application form linked above)
    • You will need to mail us your completed, signed application form, as well as clear copies of your two pieces of government-issued identification, and your payment, if applicable, which can be paid by certified cheque, business cheque or money order made payable to Toronto Police Service
